Ezra Home Care: Compassion for the Mentally Ill

Massachusett's first lady, Diane Patrick spoke in front of more than 500 attendees at the Schwartz Center's Celebration of Women In Healthcare event.

“Depression was something that only wealthy people were allowed to have. “It meant one of two things: either you were ‘crazy’ or you were self-focused and narcissistic and you spent your time with overpaid, enabling psychiatrists – and neither was acceptable.”

“The truth is that mental health just doesn’t get discussed very often in polite company, and we know why,” she said.  “There is a stigma attached to mental illness, and people are embarrassed to talk about it.  It is perceived as a weakness of the mind, of the spirit, and of one’s character.  We don’t acknowledge it in our day-to-day lives, and often we don’t even know how to.  It’s unspeakable.”
