As our parents grow older, we all become concerned about their health and the quality of their lives. It is important to know when they need professional medical advice, but they will often miss seeing the signs themselves. That is why it is important for you to closely observe their physical and mental well-being as they age.
Memory Issues
Memory is one of the first and most obvious signs that can signal that something important might be going on. If you see that your parent is often forgetting things, repeating themselves or having issues in conversations, this could be a sign that something besides normal aging is going on. These cognitive impairments can be a sign of conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Problems with Daily Activities
If you notice that your parent is struggling with activities such as cleaning, cooking or even managing finances that might be an alarming sign of either physical or mental decline.
Mood Changes
This sign is often missed or misinterpreted. Visible changes in mood, such as increased irritability, sadness or even isolation from social activities can be signs of depression or other mental problems. Mood changes are also a warning sign of several cognitive and not just emotional conditions.
Weight Loss
Sudden and unexplained weight loss could indicate a serious health problem, such as cancer, diabetes or thyroid issues. Contact your doctor and inform them about your worries. Weight loss could also be a warning sign that your parent might not be able to take care of themselves any more if they have stopped cooking. Visit them and try to determine the cause of this sudden weight loss.
Falling
As we age our physical capabilities decrease so this is a frequent issue for older adults even if they are without bigger health issues. If your parent falls often he might have some issues with balance, strength or even vision.
Mobility Issues
Observe your parents and try to determine whether they have difficulties walking, standing or getting up from the chair. This could indicate an issue with the muscles, bones or even the nervous system.
Disorientation
Disorientation is also often a sign that is usually interpreted as normal aging, but it is not always as such. Monitor your parents and see whether they become easily confused and whether they have issues recognising familiar places or faces. This could be a sign of different neurological disorders.
If you find any of such signs don’t wait to look for assistance. Visit their doctor and schedule a meeting. There are many recommendations for health and safety issues but early intervention is one of the most important ones.
