The first weeks home are the hardest

Coming home from the hospital or a rehab center after a stroke is a relief, and it is also when families feel most stretched. Your parent may be weaker on one side, unsteady on their feet, tired, or finding words harder than before. Getting up at night, showering and preparing meals can suddenly feel risky. Ezra Home Care, serving clients since 2008, provides experienced caregivers who help with daily life at home so your parent can recover in familiar surroundings and your family can rest.

How we work alongside home health and therapy

After a hospital stay, many people receive home health visits from a nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist or speech therapist. Those visits are part-time and focus on medical care and therapy. Ezra Home Care is different: we are a non-medical home care company. Our caregivers cover the hours in between: helping with daily routines, keeping your parent safe as they move around the house, and encouraging the exercises and routines their therapists recommend. We do not provide nursing or therapy, and we are not able to accept payment from Medicare or Medicaid.

What our caregivers help with after a stroke

  • Bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting, with patience and respect
  • Standing by and helping safely with walking, transfers and getting in and out of bed
  • Keeping paths clear and the home set up to lower the risk of falls
  • Meals that follow the diet plan from the hospital or doctor
  • Medication reminders
  • Encouraging the home exercise routine set by the physical or occupational therapist
  • Calm, unhurried conversation for a parent who is relearning words
  • Rides and escort to follow-up and therapy appointments
  • Light housekeeping, laundry and errands
  • Company and emotional support, and noticing changes in mood to share with the family

Choose the level of help that fits

Hourly care: a caregiver for set hours, day or night, at one hourly rate.

24-hour care: caregivers in shifts so someone is always awake and available, which many families choose for the first days or weeks home.

Live-in care: two regular caregivers who take turns, one living in at a time, at one daily rate.

Care can be adjusted as your parent gets stronger. Many families start with more hours right after discharge and reduce them as recovery progresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I call you about a hospital discharge?

As soon as you know a discharge is coming. In a free consultation we talk through the discharge plan, your parent's needs and the help required, then build a schedule. How quickly care can begin depends on the level of care needed, and our focus is on matching the right caregivers.

What is the difference between home health and Ezra Home Care?

Home health agencies send nurses and therapists for short, part-time medical and therapy visits, often after a hospital stay. Ezra Home Care is a non-medical home care company: our caregivers help with daily living, safety, meals and companionship for the hours in between those visits. Many families use both at the same time.

Do your caregivers provide physical therapy or nursing?

No. Our caregivers do not provide nursing or therapy. They support the plan your parent's medical team sets, for example by encouraging the home exercises a physical therapist recommends and giving medication reminders.

How do you select caregivers?

Every caregiver passes CORI, SORI, OIG and NARC background checks, and we verify certifications and check references. The majority of our caregivers are state-certified Home Health Aides (HHAs) or Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). We then match caregivers to your parent's needs, routine and schedule.

Does Medicare or Medicaid pay for this care?

Ezra Home Care is a private-pay company, and we cannot accept payment from Medicare or Medicaid. If your parent has long-term care insurance, we send invoices and care notes to the insurer and can help you review the policy, though we cannot guarantee a claim will be approved.

How many hours of care will my parent need?

It depends on how your parent is doing. Many families choose 24-hour or live-in care for the first days or weeks home, then reduce hours as their parent regains strength. We help you decide in the free consultation and adjust as recovery progresses.

What if the caregiver is not a good fit?

If, for any reason, you would prefer a different caregiver, we will find a replacement.

Which areas do you serve?

We serve Newton, Wellesley, Brookline, Needham, Chestnut Hill, Boston and other Greater Boston communities. Call 617-527-9000 to confirm your town.

“After hospice put me in the horrible position I called Ezra in a panic. They were kind and compassionate and moved mountains to get me a trained aide at the last moment.
